Michigan Obesity Rate Could Result in More Car Accident Injuries and Deaths

The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention released its latest report on obesity rates in the United States.  According to the study, more than one-third of U.S. adults, or 36 percent, are obese. While obesity-related health conditions include heart disease, stroke, type 2 diabetes and certain types of cancer, injury or death from car accidents may soon be added to the list.

Bicycling is a great form of exercise, and the primary means of transportation for many Michigan residents. However, when bikers take to the road, they must be aware of dangers posed by vehicles.  Although motorists and bicyclists can safely share the road, far too many Michigan cyclists have lost their lives in crashes. According to the 2011 Michigan Traffic Crash Facts, 1,895 bicycles were involved in motor vehicle crashes that year, with 24 bicyclists killed and 1,479 injured. Motorcyclist Seriously Injured in Accident, Brings Attention to Michigan Helmet Law

An accident involving a motorcycle, a passenger car, and a pickup truck Wednesday afternoon near Bloomfield Hills, MI, left the motorcyclist seriously injured, according to news reports.  The accident occurred when the eastbound motorcyclist struck a car that was attempting to turn into a shopping plaza from the westbound lanes.

The motorcyclist was wearing a helmet. However, it came loose upon impact, leaving the man with numerous fractures and head trauma.  He was airlifted to a local hospital.
